Scripture
Orthodox Christians refer to three major pillars of faith: Scripture, Tradition, and Liturgy. Holy Scripture refers to the books of the Old and New Testaments which make up the Bible. “The Bible is unique in its continuity as a collection of books written over a 1600yr span, 40 generations, different languages, over 40 authors from all walks of life yet all connected with revealing ‘God’s redemption of the human race’ and specifically Jesus Christ.”1 As Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” (John 5:39)
In the Bible, we see 1) Revelation, 2) Inspiration, and 3) Illumination. This revelation of God to humanity is a type of specific revelation, which includes miracles, prophecy, Scripture, and the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ2. By comparison, general revelation of God to humanity includes things like nature, history, and conscience which are available to all of humanity.
